July/August My Turn:
Evamaria Lugo, The Two Lists

Evamaria Lugo is a poet, artist, art critic, translator, grants writer, development consultant, and hospice volunteer. She describes herself as a Hispanic Lesbian artist and writer who has both exhibited her artwork and also published her writings. She currently works as a Grants and Contract Coordinator, Sr. for the Office of Associate Dean for Research at Public Health, University of Arizona.
In her own words: I have been writing poetry, essays, stories, and art criticism articles for many years. Both my parents were writers and had great respect and admiration for great artists and their work. I love the written word and strive to polish my skills daily. I have published my work in newspapers, magazines and my stories in anthologies. I am presently working on a manuscript of poems titled What She Had in Her Hand. My life, everyday moments, a need to "translate" events or people, and to explain things to myself are influences on my poetry. It is the same with my painting. Art to me is where I go to understand.

The Two Lists
by Evamaria Lugo
I should start a list about my idea of what hell is and put everything I dislike in it.
Like card games and noise and filth and clutter and….
But wait, what if I am only allowed one list and what if the list needs to be final.
I keep changing my mind about things. Take yellow for example.
I did not really like the color yellow for a very long time.
You would never see it in any of my paintings for many years.
And then a few years ago I saw some lemons in the store and fell in love with them.
So now my feelings about yellow as a color have changed.
So then I could leave the first list of things I hate for another day
and just work on my idea of what heaven is.
I can put things I adore in it. Like music, and mornings, and the sound of the human voice.
But in this lovely day, I will have to wait to write that list also.
Right now I am just going to be quite and look at the beautiful
fresh daffodils on the table as anyone in love with them should.
