My Turn
Linda Chappel

My artwork focuses on landscape, wildlife and the myths that humans form to mediate our interaction with nature. Through both sculpture and painting I explore how human's relationship with nature shift and changes, and is now at an important point in history.

My process utilizes my studies in both Fine art and Art History. Having a sculpture background, I often find myself adding to the backs and sides of my two-dimensional work.  During my BFA studies in Madison, Wisconsin I  was fortunate to study in the sculpture department with Dan Reitz, George Cramer and Truman Lowe. I still find myself influenced by the encouragement to work directly with the material and focus on concept.

Often I work on a common theme in several media, exploring how the media can express the various facets of the concept.  My current work starts with an allegorical figure, such as Fauna; my degree in Art History  fuels my interest in researching how artists have expressed with these concepts in the past.   The next step is taking a series of photographs and collecting images connected with the figure. Lastly I work through to painting in encaustic, oil or acrylic. At times these images are then mounted on wood, metal or other bases.

My current position is as full-time instructor at The Art Institute of Tucson. I regularly show in local Tucson galleries and in the past two years I have had work has been shown at the Western University of New Mexico Museum. I am happy to be involved in the Open Studios this Spring!
