My Turn
Lisa Arrington

Lisa Arrington is the author of YA (young adult ages 14+) science fiction books. She'll be at the Tucson Festival of Books in March.

My name is Lisa Arrington, a writer by night and an Information Security Associate by day.  I am also a native Tucsonan living with my two sons who are my reasons for getting up and doing what I do every day.

I am an avid reader who has always had a passion for writing.  Growing up I would write story stories and poems, I was even tapped to help create my elementary school’s fight song when I was in the 6th grade (go Brichta!).  Throughout my school career, English teachers were always encouraging me to enter into contests or to join clubs that focused on writing.  Thanks to them (particularly Ms. Ada Reed and Mrs. Gail Wilson) writing a novel became a life goal.

Now if I’m being honest, I always thought that if I wrote a book, I would write about being adopted by my grandparents and how that affected me growing up (fictional with some real aspects pulled in) or a children’s book or a murder mystery, basically anything but science-fiction. I loved reading it; I just never thought I could be that creative!  That thought changed back in October 2012.

One night, I dreamt that I had gone back in time to high school and was cheering my loudest at one of our basketball games.  After the game we were walking to our cars, discussing what we wanted to do next when an earthquake happened!  Right before our eyes, the earth cracked open and this thick black sludge flowed out.  If it touched anyone, they would change into these mystical creatures (think Egyptian jackals) that became hell bent on turning others.

When I woke up the next morning, I had to wonder what in the world had I eaten or drank to bring that on.  Then I found myself writing about it on Facebook…then on paper…and then in Word.  Before I knew it, I had a science-fiction book on my hands and wanted to share it with friends.

They kept asking me why I wouldn’t look into publishing it and I never had a good answer for it.  One friend introduced me to self-publishing, what a whirlwind that has been.  I now know how to format books for Kindle, Nook and paperback, and who to go to for my book covers. I have very trusted beta-readers (test audience) and proofreaders.  Even though I have enjoyed this process I am now, however, submitting my manuscript to publication agencies so that will be one last thing on my plate and I won’t feel so scatterbrained!

I have the sequel, AfterShock, coming out at the end of March, and then will jump right into the third and final book of the trilogy.  I’m looking forward to expanding my writing to include romantic comedy and maybe some regular gold old romance.  Although since I use my life and friends’ life experiences to bring realism to my writing, it just might end up being comical as I am definitely unlucky in love!

I have received the great honor of being selected as part of the Tucson Festival of Books and will be at the West Author’s Pavilion Saturday, March 15th from 2-4pm.  If you would like to learn more about my debut novel, Quake, please visit my website www.lisaawrites.com  or my Facebook page www.facebook.com/lisaawrites. I love hearing from people.

When I’m not working or writing, I can be found curled up on my favorite chair with my Kindle in hand, chauffeuring one of the boys to basketball practices and games or absorbed in a Murder, She Wrote/Golden Girls marathon. I love the color blue, can't get enough of butter pecan ice cream and will forever be in a power-struggle over the big screen TV with my youngest.

If you would like to purchase my book it can be found locally at Mostly Books and Antigone Books.  It is available on-line at Amazon, Barnes & Nobel and Kobo.  People can also contact me directly through my website and Facebook; I always try to have copies on hand.
