My Turn
Liz Vaughn

Defining my style is always something I find difficult to explain. Finding “your style” requires some risk taking, frequent failures, and a willingness to expose yourself to public commentary. During the early years, my work primarily centered on figure studies, and I used giant tubes of paint like they were going out of style. Along with Modigliani, I also found inspiration in the work of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Friedrich Hundertwasser, and perhaps just a touch of Picasso. I tried to separate the figure from worldliness and float her in a space of timeless light. The eyes needed to fall off the head, protrude into that other surreal world. The body needed to be ridiculously out of balance. Those early paintings were perhaps unrefined and naive, but they embodied great passion and truth to oneself.

My contemporary paintings are much the same, but with a bit greater depth these days. I often incorporate words, poems, or lyrics on the canvas. Color is a mainstay, and disjointed figures are always part of the recipe. I cannot deny my love of painting. It fills my heart and allows me to share the passion. Tucson is a lovely place to create and feed your inspiration; we are surrounded by talented local artists, and the sunsets never disappoint!
Currently I live and create everything artful out of my home studio in northwest Tucson. We call it the “Art Room”; it really is a simple bedroom in our home, but out of that comes great inspiration! The easel I work on was hand made by my brother many years ago, and that is no small part of the formula. I continue to show at local art shows and the Tucson Open Studio Tour twice a year. At any given show, you will undoubtedly find me surrounded by a large collection color saturated canvases, complete with those figures with overly large eyes – sometimes falling off their face.
