Tucson Sculpture Festival, 2014

Tucsonans
and many out-of-town visitors here for the Gem and Mineral Show are being
treated with a unique and wonderful exhibit of works in the Fifth Annual Tucson
Sculpture Festival. The festival opens Feb.1 and work is on display for two
weeks. The festival is sponsored by BICAS as part of its 25th
anniversary celebration.
BICAS is a well-known community organization for bicyclists interested in learning more about bicycles, how to maintain and repair them, and how to make art from old bike parts. More than 60 sculptors are showing work in the festival.
Tanya Rich, Art Coordinator at BICAS, is acting as this year’s Sculpture Festival coordinator. “The Sculpture Festival opens February 1 this year at The Art Gallery, 1122 N. Stone Ave. Sculpture will be on view from Feb. 2 through 15 from 11 am to 7 pm. The closing reception will be at the Sculpture Resource Center, 640 North Stone Ave.”

Rich adds that the festival’s opening reception features music by Augustus Woodrow – Tomizuka from 6 to 8 pm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WF7ikhUq86A), Nathaniel Burnside from 8 to 10 pm (http://www.nathanielburnside.com/) and jam sessions with ANARCHESTRA (http://www.anarchestra.net/) every day during the two week event. Food and drink as well as music, wearable art, “living sculptures,” and 3-D printing will also be part of the opening event on Feb. 1.
This year after a couple of other venues fell through, Steve Murray, owner of the Art Gallery, stepped forward to provide space. “My building turned out to be a good place for this festival,” Murray says. The closing reception will be held at the Sculpture Resource Center which historically has been involved in the festival.

When asked what it has been like for her to coordinate the Tucson Sculpture Festival, Tanya Rich says, “I’m having the time of my life! This has been so much fun and I’ve met so many wonderful people. I can’t wait for what comes next.”
