September 2013 My Turn
Victor Navarro
My name is Victor Navarro, Artist. I was born in Guadalajara Mexico, and have been living in Tucson since I was 10 years old. I completed my studies at The University of Arizona with a BFA and a minor in Marketing as well as a M.Ed. at Northern Arizona University, Tucson Campus ; I consider myself a resident artist.
I started the International Art Exchange in 2009 while I was an art student at the University of Arizona. With the participation of several local and international art figures in the community, the objective was to initiate a dialogue between France (the old world) and Southern Arizona (the new world) artists; to share their talents with the art exhibit and to also interchange cultural point of views with our local talents and hosts. The event in 2009 was such a success that it allowed many people who participated either as artists or guests to expand their relations and develop new friendships and artistic opportunities.

As the Director/Artist, I was motivated to continue with the exchange as a yearly project. The following year, our Tucson group traveled to Paris, France to showcase the flavor of the southwest; subsequent the year after the French participants came to Sonora (San Carlos) and until this day a yearly visit to France and the Southwest (Arizona, Sonora and Baja California) has continued. Now I am directing the 5th exchange this year. Our base will be La Paz, Baja California. By having partnerships with the art authorities and organizations such as the “Jardin del Arte,” we have developed a 10 day exhibit, with cultural events open to the public to get a taste of our imported talents.

While undertaking the organization of this exchange, my priority as an artist is to work on my art work and develop series and collections. I recently came back from Cuba, where I immersed myself in the Santeria religion and culture. This allowed me to saturate my mind with the colors, and vibrations of such wonderful and mystic traditions from Africa that came to Cuba with slavery many hundreds of years ago. Exploring the different symbolism and mysticism in an abstract manner, I have created my collection “Orishas” where splashes of color and textures delight the pupil.
As the artist, I am interested in growing further into the field of exhibiting in Arizona galleries and to continue to create my works in order to share part of my soul and creative energy with the viewer.
